            Arthur (Art) Preston Taylor, Jr., age 79, of Osage Beach, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at Lake Regional Health System, Osage Beach, Missouri.  He was born February 20, 1929 in Sutton, Nebraska, a son to Arthur P. Sr. and Lillian (Newham) Taylor.  Art graduated from Weeping Water High School in 1948 in Weeping Water, Nebraska. He was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion Post 2442.

          Art married Joan Smith in 1951 in Murray, Nebraska. She preceded him in death in 1958, along with an unborn child and his daughter Teresa Diane Taylor.  He was employed by Allied Chemical Company in LaPlatte, Nebraska.  In 1960, in Omaha, Nebraska, he married Betty Billet and they enjoyed 48 years of marriage.  They moved to Osage Beach, Missouri in 1961.  Art was employed by Richard Surbaugh Architect and Contract in Lake Ozark, while building Sunset Beach Resort.  The family owned and operated the resort until 1977. He then went into building homes and service work around the lake area, retiring in 2000 and working on his home.  Art was a member of the Murray Christian Church in Murray, Nebraska.

          He is survived by his wife Betty Billet Taylor of the home; one daughter, Mishell Taylor Nelson; one sister Darlene Cakley and nieces Kathleen Richards and Susan Clark.

 

 

          Bernice Lindsey was born April 28, 1913 in rural Nehawka, the daughter of Frank and Thelma (Schroeten) Hogue.  She married Jack Lindsey June 5, 1936 in Omaha.  Jack died October 15, 1984.  Berniece lived lived in the Nehawka area her entire life.  She taught school in rural Cass County several years ago and worked for years in Sunday School, United Methodist Women, Cub Scouts, Brownies, Girl Scouts, 4-H Clubs and at the Cass County Fair.  Bernice was a member of the Nehawka United Methodist Church and Mix it Extension Club.  She loved reading, knitting, crocheting, gardening and flowers. 

          Survivors include her son, David Lindsey and his wife Barbara of Arvada, CO; daughter, Mary Adams of Charleston, WV; grandchildren, Joe and Amy Lindsey, Tim Lindsey and Laura Adams; sister in law, Alene Hogue of Nehawka, NE; numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack; brothers, Leland and Roland; sisters, Margaret Plueler, Doris Engelkemier and Ruth Ketelhut.  Bernice died December 5, 2008 at the Ambassador in Nebraska City at the age of 95.

 

 

Marvin Wayne Hogrefe was born July 28, 1936 in Auburn, NE, the son of Ernest Ludwig and Lenora Lucia (Gerdes) Hogrefe.  He married Karen Elaine Rakes June 7, 1959 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Nemaha County.  He formerly lived in Auburn, Tecumseh and Syracuse before moving to Nehawka in 1977.  Marvin did quarry work for Martin Marietta.  He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Union.  He was also a longtime member and past president of Nehawka Volunteer Fire Department.  Marvin loved gardening and working outdoors.  He also loved family gatherings and always loved spending time with his kids and grandchildren. 

Survivors include his wife, Karen Hogrefe of Nehawka, NE; sons, Robin Hogrefe of Lincoln, NE; Rodney Hogrefe and his wife Cindy of Nehawka, NE; daughters, Tammy Peterson of Nebraska City, NE; Leanna Adams and her husband David of Nehawka, NE; sister, Mary Ann Hogrefe of Humboldt, NE; sister, Phyllis Williamson and her husband Robert of Dawson, NE; brother, Robert Hogrefe and his wife Susie of Auburn, NE; grandchildren, Shawn Laurence and his wife Nativa, Shane Adams and his wife Alyssa, Ryan Adams and his wife Sarah, Rebecca Wilkinson and her friend Dave Casterline, Ashley, Hailey and Trevor Hogrefe; great grandchildren, Camden and Jayc Laurence, Blaine Adams and Riley Faulkner; many other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents.  Marvin died December 3, 2008 at his residence in Nehawka at the age of 72.

 

 

          Adolph Meyer was born November 23, 1907 in Talmage, NE, the son of          Adolph and Dorette (Koch) Meyer.  He married Dorothy Lenore Sheeley March 29, 1942 in Falls City, NE.  Adolph lived in California, Arkansas, Arizona, Missouri, Kansas and Iowa before moving to Nebraska City in 1998.  He was a retired farmer and conservationist.  Adolph was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod) in Nebraska City.  He loved fishing, woodworking, gardening and inventing. 

          Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Lenore Meyer of Nebraska City, NE; sons, Adolph Philip Meyer and wife Darlene of Omaha, NE; Tim Meyer and wife Cathy of Nebraska City, NE; Fred Meyer and wife Marsha of Omaha, NE; Kenny Meyer of Nebraska City, NE; daughters, Miriam Meyer of Plattsmouth, NE; Gretchen Cooper and husband John of Lincoln, NE; Ruth Shaw and husband Wayne of Parsons, KS; Mary Porter and husband Bob of Wellington, KS; 14 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; brothers, Arnold Meyer of Nebraska; sisters, Marie Nabor of Colorado; many other relatives and friends .  He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, George and Henry Meyer; sisters, Lena Clark, Minnie Staack and Ida Badburg; grandson, Michael Lee Meyer and granddaughter, Brittnie Ludwig.  Adolph died November 27, 2008 at the Golden Living Center in Nebraska City at the age of 101 years and 4 days.

 

 

Virgil William Griepenstroh was born June 23, 1917 in Syracuse, NE, the son of John Henry and Christine Maria Sophie (Poppe) Griepenstroh.  He married Lucille Elizabeth Eloge December 15, 1940 in Hamburg, IA.  Lucille died July 24, 2003.  Virgil lived in the Nebraska City area most of his life and he worked in construction for many years prior to his retirement.  He served in the Army in the Pacific during World War II.  Virgil was a member of the Bethel United Church of Christ, Eagles Aerie No. 968, Elks Lodge No. 1049; American Legion Post No. 8, and the Labor Union.  He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He was an avid Husker fan and enjoyed helping his wife with their upholstery business.  Virgil was an avid gardener and was always known for giving his garden produce and black walnuts to many friends and relatives. 

Survivors include his sons, Jerry Griepenstroh and his wife Diann (correct spelling) of San Diego, CA; Gary Griepenstroh of Lincoln, NE; Daryl Griepenstroh and his wife Maggie of Nebraska City, NE; daughters, Sharon Kapustka and her husband Bob of Lincoln, NE; Lou Ann Buetzer of Nebraska City, NE; grandchildren, Terri Wallace and her husband Coy, Rick Kapustka and his wife Trish, Lance Griepenstroh and his wife Jeannette, Travin Griepenstroh and Maegen Bower, Chris Griepenstroh and his wife Connie, Dan Griepenstroh and Charlotte Hamlin, Alyson Buetzer and Marco Delgado, Sam Buetzer and Josh Peterson, great grandchildren, Morgan and Chandler Wallace, Matthew and Sarah Kapustka, Addyson Griepenstroh and Gabriela Buetzer; sister, Helen Ramold of Nebraska City, NE; sisters in law, Ardell Eloge of Lincoln, NE and Bess Eloge of Nebraska City, NE; many other relatives and friends.  Virgil was preceeded in death by his parents; wife, Lucille; brothers, Eldon, LaVerne and Melvin.  Virgil died November 22, 2008 at St. Mary’s Community Hospital in Nebraska City at the age of 91.

 

 

Patricia Ann Marunda was born August 12, 1928 in Union, the daughter of John William and Grace Elizabeth (Montgomery) Everett.  She married Douglas Marunda February 14, 1947 in Hiawatha, KS.  Douglas died April 14, 1981.  Patricia lived in the Union and Nebraska City areas her entire life. She worked as a seamstress and also worked in the bakery at Norman’s IGA.  Patricia was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Nebraska City, of which she was extremely active.  She loved cats and sports, especially baseball and football. 

Survivors include her sons, Dennis Marunda of Papillion; Terry Marunda of Nebraska City; daughters, Marcia McDonald and her husband Patric, Sr. (correct spelling) of Nebraska City; Cathy Warren of Nebraska City; seven grandchildren, Kelly Astrunda and her husband John, William Marunda and his wife Keri, Richard Marunda and his wife Heather, Patric (correct spelling) McDonald, Jr. and his wife Michelle, Alisha McDonald, Shelli Eyman, Theresa Berry and her husband Darrell; great grandchildren, Dylan and Hayden Berry, Garrison and Madelyn Astrunda, Cassaundra McDonald; brother, Dale Everett and his wife Cindy of Union; sisters, Betty Hoback and her husband Kenneth of Union; Mildred Allen and her husband Clifford of Nebraska City; Louise Harpole and her husband Darel (correct spelling) of Ralston; Georgine Peeler and her husband Don of Hamburg, IA; sisters-in-law, Florence Marunda of Nebraska City; Opal Everett of Union and Mary Ellen Everett of Plattsmouth; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, John, Jr. “Bill” and Marshall.  Patricia died November 19, 2008 at St. Mary’s Community Hospital in Nebraska City at the age of 80.

 

 

Lee Henry Joesting, the son of Louis H. and Anna Louise (Broermann) Joesting, was born July 16, 1923 in Tarkio, Missouri.  He attended Highbank Country School west of Tarkio until the eighth grade. Lee joined the United States Army, proudly serving his country during World War II, from 1943 – 1946.  On December 2, 1981, Lee was united in marriage to Marie Catherine Holliway in Orange County, California.  He farmed west of Tarkio most of his life. In 1984, Lee purchased a farm north of Auburn, Nebraska. He and Marie lived there until retiring in 1994, when they moved to Nebraska City, Nebraska. They enjoyed wintering in Casa Grande, Arizona. Lee was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Westboro, Missouri.  He passed away November 18, 2008 at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebraska City at the age of 85 years. 

Besides his parents, Lee is preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Joesting and Herman Joesting and four sisters, Mary Parr, Hilda Walter, Inez Tieman and an infant sister.  Lee is survived by his wife, Marie of the home in Nebraska City; one step-daughter, Barbara Hultman and her husband, Steve, Tampa, Florida and one step-granddaughter, Sarah Hultman, Tampa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

 

Steve A. Jones was born March 8, 1949 in Nehawka, the son of Dewey Lee and Doris Marie (Smith) Jones.  Steve formerly lived in many towns but always called Nehawka home.  He loved hunting, fishing, camping and the outdoors and worked for many years as a heavy equipment operator. 

Survivors include his sons, Clinton Jones, Chad Jones, Clayton Jones and his wife Jessica, all of Nebraska City; daughters, Sheila Propp and her husband Danny of Hamburg, IA; Nadine Jones and Natalie Jones, both of Lincoln; six grandchildren; brothers, Buck, Art, Derald, Leonard and Cleland; sisters, Francine Mead, Shirley Ruhge, Diane Lay and Marsha Thomas; many other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dewey Wayne Jones and Lonnie Jones; and sister, Janet Verbeek.  Steve died November 13, 2008 at his brother’s residence in Nehawka at the age of 59.

 

 

Le Roy “Dusty” Ried, Jr. was born August 8, 1960, the son of Le Roy and Linda (Kearney) Ried, Sr.  He formerly lived in Union, NE and Layton, UT and was a longtime resident of Omaha.  Dusty was a warehouse forklift operator.  He loved NASCAR, hunting and fishing. 

Survivors include his daughters, Jacqueline Jo Ried and Juliet Jo Ried; parents, Le Roy and Linda (Kearney) Ried, Sr.; brother, Larry Ried and Angela; sister, Lesha Wilson and her husband, Todd; all of Omaha, NE; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his former wife, Teri Jo Kirby and his grandparents.  Dusty died November 5, 2008 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center at the age of 48.

 

 

Pansy L. Berner was born July 24, 1920 in Dunbar, NE, the daughter of George and Charlotte (Grieswell) Wright.  She married Paul F. Berner December 29, 1941 in Omaha, NE.  Paul died June 13, 1999 at their home.  Pansy and her husband farmed near Otoe for many years before moving to Nebraska City. She worked at the Pendleton Woolen Mills and then managed the Pendleton Outlet Store in Nebraska City for 30 years.  Pansy loved reading and quilting. 

Survivors include her son, Lynn Berner and his wife Luise of Lincoln; daughter, Linda Sutton and her husband John of Nebraska City; grandchildren and spouses, Jenny Berner of Lincoln; Heather and Jeff Thomsen of Geneva; Jeff and Emily Berner of Lincoln; great grandchildren, Dylan Colgrove of Geneva and Madeleine Berner of Lincoln; sisters, Phyllis Peterson and her husband, C.M., Lois Wellman and her husband Raymond, Marcia Daffer, all of Syracuse; brother in law, Richard Berner and his wife Mary of Plattsmouth; many nieces and nephews; and beloved pets, Lily and J.J.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul; granddaughter, Kristine and brother, Alvin.  Pansy died November 2, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center in Syracuse, NE at the age of 88.

 

 

Arlyce Ann Nienkamp was born January 14, 1938 on the family farm near Gresham, NE, the daughter of Elmer and Eleanora (Nelson) Schuknecht.  She married Gary Nienkamp June 8, 1958 at the Wayland Christian Congregational Church in rural Gresham, NE.  Ann was a 1955 graduate of Gresham High School and attended Doane College in Crete, NE where she received her teaching certificate.  She taught 4th Grade for one year in Osceola, NE and three years at Oberlin, OH.  With her pastor husband, Ann lived near Milford, NE from 1961 – 1966; at Belle Fourche, SD from 1966 – 1970 before moving to Nebraska City in 1970.  Ann has been the primary owner and operator of The Sewing Basket fabric store in Nebraska City since October 1, 1975.  She was a member of PEO Chapter CF and served on the Nebraska City Planning Commission. 

Ann was also a member of the Nebraska City School Board for several years and served as a long-time leader and helper for area 4-H Clubs, especially relative to sewing projects.  She was a member of Bethel United Church of Christ in Nebraska City where she taught Sunday School and was active in the Women’s Fellowship.  She also sang in the choir and was a long-time organist and choir accompanist. 

Survivors include her husband, Gary Nienkamp of Nebraska City, NE; daughters, Judy Nienkamp of Nebraska City, NE; Betty and husband Todd Mason and grandchildren, Jacob and Emily Mason of Firth, NE; and daughter, Meredith Nienkamp of Marietta, GA; mother, Eleanora Schuknecht of York, NE; sister, Jane Batterton and her husband Lee of York, NE; many other relatives, neighbors and friends.  She was preceded in death by her father in 1988.  Ann lived with cancer for over 22 years before her death at The Ambassador Care Center in Nebraska City on October 3, 2008 at the age of 70 years, 8 months and 19 days.

 

 

Freddy Joe Gonzales was born November 13, 1978 in Omaha, the son of William Karnish and Linda Gonzales.  He worked in building construction and had lived in Greenville, OH and Red Oak, IA before returning to Omaha several years ago.  He loved video games, fishing and camping. 

Survivors include his son, Freddy Junior Gonzales; former wife, Josie Gonzales; mother, Linda Tolles; daughter, Leanna Walker-VanPelt; sister, Chasity Gonzales; brothers, Louie and Jeremy Gonzales; many other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents; father and daughter, Zabrina Hale.  Freddy died in the Missouri River in Cass County near Lak WaConDa on August 31, 2008 at the age of 29.

 

 

Sharon Kay Van Ert was born March 19, 1942 in Omaha, NE, the daughter of Lawrence and Helen (Vincent) Miller.  She married Don Van Ert October 13, 1975 in Omaha.  Sharon formerly lived in Omaha before moving to Union in 1976.  She worked at the Salvation Army in Omaha and was a member of the Union United Methodist Church and was past president of the Bellevue Dog Club.  She was past secretary of Rural School District #10.  Sharon loved dogs, knitting, crocheting and needle point. 

Survivors include her husband, Don Van Ert of Union, NE; sons, Steven Glesmann and his wife Denise of Council Bluffs, IA and Lawrence Glesmann of Murray, NE; daughter, Leota Noerrlinger and her husband Jim of Union, NE; three grandchildren, Jamee Johnston, Katie Noerrlinger and Kiley Noerrlinger; sister, Lucy Jordan and her husband Pat of Ralston, NE; many other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents and son, John Glesmann.  Sharon died August 17, 2008 at her residence near Union at the age of 66.
