Obituary for Don McAllister

Donald Merlin McAllister was born August 16, 1951 in Shenandoah, Iowa and died on May 7, 2020 in Essex, Iowa. Donald was preceded in death by his father Merlin Ritter McAllister & Son Jason Robert McAllister. He is survived by his wife Karen R McAllister; his mother Sylvia A McAllister; his sister Marcia A McAllister; his wife from first marriage Darlia Simmons; his children: Donald Patrick McAllister & wife Tracy McAllister, Tera Lynne McAllister-Krueger & husband Erich Krueger, and Jeremy Todd McAllister & wife Jennifer L McAllister.

Donald was married to Karen R (Grooms nee: McDonnall) McAllister on June 4, 1983 and lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado until moving to Farragut, Iowa in December of 1983. Donald is also survived by his stepchildren: Thane Marquis Grooms & wife Karen; Troy Marcus Grooms & wife Suzanne; Tye Marius Grooms and Todd Marcell Grooms. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren & 7 great grandchildren: to Donnie & Tracy McAllister – Jacob & Ashley; to Sabrina & Adam Wright – Austin, Owen & Lauren; to Trisha & Victor Ruiz – Adalynn, Aaliyah & Watson; to Alicia McAllister & Christian Lobendo – Caytlynn; to Tera & Erich Krueger – Jack & Naomi; to Jeremy & Jennifer McAllister – Dalton; to Troy & Suzanne Grooms - Brandon, Ashley & Katie; to Tye Grooms: Skylier, Trever, Tristin & Sara; and so many more family & friends.

Don graduated from the Airforce Academy High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado
Don belonged to the NRA, Appleseed Program, Sons of the American Revolution. He enjoyed supporting the Fremont County Republican Party, and the Reserve Deputy Association and served in Fremont County as a Reserve Deputy for many years. Don was a Farragut School Bus Driver & loved it.

Don enjoyed working the McAllister Farm Service and until his passing “Don’s Johns & Septic Pumping” for 31years. He enjoyed woodworking, his sawmill, ham radios, gardening and establishing a rifle range at his home. He worked hard and enjoyed developing “Catalpa Creek Arborous Aviary”, a park at home for friends & family to enjoy camping, picnicking & a wonderful piece of nature that he loved –Wildlife, birds, trees, beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

A love was Working with the family & friends to establish a meeting place for his community “Freedom Corner” at the masonic lodge building in Farragut. Don enjoyed playing recordings of saloon music by David Bourne and the “Son’s of the Joaquine”. We added a museum next door “Memories” The History & Stories of the Farragut Area. Don loved arising early in the morning to listen to “Coast to Coast and to greet his many friends & family on Facebook. Don loved God, Family & Country.

There will be a Celebration of Life from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM Saturday, May 16, 2020 at Freedom Corner, 601 Hartford Street in Farragut, IA. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, May 16, 2020 also at Freedom Corner. There will be private interment of ashes later in the Farragut, IA Cemetery and memorials will go to the Fremont County Reserve Deputies or the Farragut Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department. The Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Sidney, IA is in charge of local arrangements.
