Obituary for Evelyn Howrey

Evelyn Lorraine Harman Moore Howrey, the oldest of four children was born February 5, 1924 to Grant Earl and Marjorie Marie (Snodgrass) Harman at her grandparents’ farm home north of Malvern, Iowa.

Growing up on farms she loved the outdoors-helping her father with chores, in the fields and gardens — honing her cooking skills when she married after graduating from Tabor High School in 1942. October 24, 1942 she married Gerald Moore at Chanute Field, IL. During World War II, from 1943 to 1945, she worked at the Bomber Plant in Omaha. In 1945 they began farming and started a family, blessed with two children, Sharon and Gary.

In February 1960 Evelyn and Gerald moved to Tabor where she worked as a waitress at various restaurants, Glenwood State School, Peoples Natural Gas, and Dultmeier Sales in secretarial positions. After Gerald passed away Evelyn and Gary purchased Vans Farm Supply in Tabor in 1979 which became Moore’s Farm Supply. In 1983 she semi-retired from the store.

Glen Howrey and Evelyn married in July 1985 beginning a motor home travel adventure, spending winters in Arizona. When in Iowa they settled in Tabor and Randolph until 2000 when they moved to her current home in Tabor. Husband Glen passed away in November 2017. Evelyn remained independent in her home enjoying family and friends, playing bridge every Tuesday, and frequently going to the store she and Gary operated to play cribbage with “the guys”. Evelyn was a member of the Congregational Church, Order of Eastern Star, and VFW Auxiliary in Tabor.

She leaves behind her loving daughter, Sharon Tackett of Lincoln, Nebraska and son, Gary and wife Connie Moore of Tabor, granddaughter Cynthia and husband Brian Hegarty of Victoria, MN; granddaughter Gretchen and husband Roger Madison of Thurman, and Grandson Trent and wife Mandy Moore of Randolph, great grandchildren Abbie, Brock and Libby Hegarty, Tiffany and Eric Johnson, Elizabeth, Meaghan and Nicholas Madison, Colton and Malea Moore, and six great-great grandchildren, sisters LeVon McCollester and Donna Fay and families, as well as stepchildren Glenda Bowser, Joyce Howrey, Steve Howrey, Stan and wife Effie Howrey, grandchildren Jill, Steve and Billie, Serena and Natalie, many great grandchildren, brother-in-law Merrill Howrey and family, and many nieces and nephews.
