Obituary for Jean Marie Thayer

Jean Marie Thayer was born May 2, 1933 in Omaha, the daughter of Floyd Edmond and Martha Ruth (Hummel) Higgins. She married Foy Edward Thayer 64 years ago at the First Presbyterian Church in Nebraska City. Jean lived in the Nebraska City area most of her life and was very active in the community. She was a member of the Eagles and American Legion Auxiliaries and was a former NCHS Alumni Foundation board member. She volunteered in St. Mary’s Hospital Gift Shop and was a member of the Historical Society and Women’s Division of the Chamber of Commerce. Jean served in various capacities at the Otoe County Courthouse and was elected and served as the Otoe County Register of Deeds for several years. She collected owls and loved bowling, gardening and spending time with her family. She attended many of her children and grandchildren’s sporting events. Survivors include her husband, Foy of Nebraska City, daughters, Cathy Wellensiek and husband Henry of Syracuse, Cheryl Swanson of Nebraska City; Mary Gilliland and husband Gary of Lincoln; son, Mark Thayer of Omaha; grandsons, Corey Swanson, Lukas Gilliland and friend Kailee Groshans; sister in law, Norma Jean Ogan of Monmouth, OR; many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; son in law, Chuck Swanson; father in law and mother in law, Mark And Agnes Thayer; brother in law and sister in law, Kenny and Lois Vollertsen; and brother in law, Bob Ogan. Jean died December 17, 2019 at Bryan LGH East Medical Center in Lincoln at the age of 86 years, 7 months and 15 days.
