Obituary for John Thomas Woolsey

John Thomas Woolsey, age 73 of Sidney, IA, passed away on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 in Council Bluffs, IA. Tom was born on March 2, 1947 in Shenandoah, IA. He was the oldest child of John Durwood and Doris Esther (Thomas) Woolsey. He grew up in Coin, Iowa and graduated from South-Page High School in 1965. Tom loved playing baseball, vocal music, and speech in high school.

The fall of 1965 Tom began college at Peru State College where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts with a minor in Safety Education, graduating in 1975.

On January 17, 1970, Tom was united in marriage to Mary Susan Blezek at the Presbyterian Church in Sidney, Iowa and was married nearly fifty years.

The couple made their home in Malvern, Iowa. Tom left college at this time and worked various jobs in the area, returning later to complete his degree. Tom taught in Nebraska City, Nebraska and Council Bluffs, IA.

In the early 1980's, Tom again returned to college at Bellevue University to earn an Accounting degree and open Woolsey Accounting in Glenwood, Iowa and for the next ten years he operated his business.

In 1991, the family moved to the Blezek family farm between Sidney and Tabor, IA. In the mid 1990's Tom began teaching in southwest Iowa. He became an over the road truck driver, which he has done for over the last twenty years, most recently with Nationwide Transportation.

Tom is survived by his children: Suzanne (Randy) Mages and James (Mindy) Woolsey, five grandchildren, his brother James William (Linda) Woolsey and family, his sister Norma Adams and family, and former wife Mary Woolsey. Tom was preceded in death by his parents John and Doris Woolsey.

Private family services will be held at a later date, with burial of ashes at the Elmwood Cemetery in Coin, Iowa. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to Tom's family in care of his son James. The Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel of Sidney, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements.
