Obituary for Margaret May Brawner

Margaret May (Hatten) Brawner, 90, passed away Friday, January 15, 2021 at The Ambassador in Nebraska City. A private graveside service for close family will be held Tuesday afternoon with a Memorial Service to be announced later in the year. Margaret moved to Nebraska City as a child with her mother, Bessie Hatten, to open a grocery store. She attended Nebraska City High School where she was active with music, cheerleading, and student government. She started dating her future husband, Jack, soon after she asked to borrow his letterman jacket for a school event. They eloped and married September 22, 1952 in a small service in Lincoln, NE and embarked upon a three-week honeymoon trip throughout the country. Margaret worked in her mother’s grocery, and then for noted chiropractor, Dr. Major DeJarnette until she gave birth to her son, Philip. She helped out at Brawner Furniture until its closure in 2000. She volunteered in many charitable and philanthropic organizations in the Nebraska City area. Margaret enjoyed being involved in Beta Sigma Phi sorority and its numerous community projects, such as volunteering to manage St. Mary’s Hospital Gift Shop, which was recently named, ‘Margaret’s Gifts’ in her honor. She joined St. Mary’s Hospital Board of Trustees and became the first President of the hospital’s Foundation. She was a member of Belles-A-Peelin’, First United Methodist Church and Church Choir, Nebraska City Alumni Association, the annual bridge tournament, and bowled in leagues for over 50 years. Everything Margaret did, she did with passion and commitment. Her son-in-law, Ted Johnson said of Margaret, “It’s people like Margaret Brawner who make small towns thrive. She ‘joined in’ and served her city well for almost her entire life and Nebraska City is all the better for her efforts.” Margaret loved to travel, spend time with her family, and she sang at special events, both as a soloist and with the quartet, ‘The Five of Us’. She also loved attending music and theatrical events, both in New York and Nebraska, especially those which included her son, Phil, being on stage. Margaret suffered a severe stroke in February of 2016 and became a resident of the Ambassador. Her family is very thankful for the love and care provided to her by the staff of the Ambassador. She experienced a slow, steady decline as her condition worsened and her family believes she is now free of her broken body, her foggy mind, and is rejoicing with God for a life of faith and service to others. Margaret is survived by her husband of 68 years, Jack G. Brawner, her son, Philip and son-in-law, Ted.
