Obituary for Patricia Scmitt Penn

Patricia Ann Schmitt was the firstborn daughter of Nicholas Bernard and Bertha Knapp Schmitt. She was born at the Women's Hospital in downtown Omaha on January 23, 1928. She died Thursday, September 24, 2020 at the Sidney Ambassador following an extended illness. Pat and her sister, Bonnie Lee, were students of the Lutheran Church and attended services there. They were also active in the Sunday School and Youth League. Pat and Bonnie also studied ballet and danced on all of the stages of the large downtown Omaha theatres. Bertha was an excellent seamstress and made all of their costumes.

Patricia attended Washington Grade School and Benson High School, which was just a block from her home. After high school she attended William Woods College in Fulton, MO, a two-year college, and received her diploma. After graduating she attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She was also a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority.

After graduation, Pat applied and was awarded the position of English and Science teacher at Sidney Public Schools. She really enjoyed all the classes she taught. The local pharmacist was pretty impressed with this new teacher and on September 13, 1952, they were married at the First Lutheran Church in Omaha.

Pat decided after the 1949-50 school year that she wanted a year-round job and went to work in the office of the Kellogg Corporation until she was married. Bill and Pat were blessed with one son, W. Jeffrey Penn, and were fortunate to foster his love of music. Jeffrey earned a scholarship to the Eastman School of Music and was awarded his Bachelor's Degree in Performance. He then received a Master’s Degree from Indiana State University. Bill and Pat were so proud and attended all of Jeff’s concerts and solo performances.

In addition to loving dance and music, Pat was a member of the Sidney Research Club, a 50 year member of the PEO Chapter DO, and several bridge clubs including the Couples Bridge Club. Pat worked with her husband, Bill, at Penn Drug Company. Eventually, they were joined by their son, Jeffrey, and he helped run the drugstore until his death in March, 2014 of a heart attack.

Bill and Pat were both avid sports fans, always supporting the Sidney Cowboys. In addition, they held season tickets to the University of Nebraska (Huskers) Football Games and the College World Series. They also loved the Omaha Community Playhouse and enjoyed vacations when they were lucky enough to find a relief pharmacist. Pat was always up for an adventure, and Bill surprised her with a hot-air balloon ride over Sidney one year for her birthday. In 2011, it became necessary for Pat to go in to the Ambassador Sidney, but she never quit wanting to be in her own home with Bill.

Pat was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Penn, and her son W. Jeffrey Penn. She is survived by her sister Bonnie Lahr of Knoxville. TN; and nephew, Dirk (Timolyn) Lahr of Knoxville, TN and their children, Drake and Chase; niece Deborah (Knox) Kimberly of Austin, TX and their children, Thomas and Megan; and niece Lissa (Don) Kurtz of The Villages, FL and their children, Brian and Katie.
