Obituary for Verne A. Wilkins

Verne Alda Wilkins, 99, of Tabor, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 9th. Verne was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, August 1, 1920, the son of V. G. and Lena (Bada) Wilkins. His early years were spent in the Silver City area. The family then moved to a farm south of Tabor, where Verne attended high school, graduating in 1937. After a semester at Tabor college, he helped his Dad on the farm, worked for Wayne Ruse as a truck driver and worked for Harold Wilkins as a mechanic.

A childhood accident prevented Verne from serving on active duty during WWII. Therefore, he served on the home front helping construct an air base in Alliance, Nebraska and later as a master welder at Offutt Air Force Base building Martin Bombers.

On April 6, 1944, he married Elma Hansen, and the young couple moved to Tabor where Verne began working for Nelson Brother’s International Harvester dealership. Two sons were born to this union, Duane Verne and Darrell Martin.

In 1949, Verne opened his own repair shop, which later became known as Modern Service, an icon in the Tabor business community. In 1950 Modern Service added a J. I. Case dealership and in 1952 added a Nash and Hudson dealership. This was followed by a change to America Motors Corporation (AMC) and the Case dealership was dissolved. The AMC dealership continued until Verne’s retirement in 1977. However, Verne’s retirement did not last long, in 1978 Modern Service became a Chrysler/Dodge dealership which continued until Verne’s second retirement in 1983. Throughout their marriage, Verne and Elma enjoyed traveling and spending many winters in southern Texas.

Verne served three terms as mayor of Tabor as well as several terms on the city council. First elected in 1952, highlights of his tenure as mayor include Tabor’s Centennial celebration, the installation of the dial telephone system, the installation of a natural gas system and an upgrade to the Tabor water system. Verne was a life time member of the Tabor Congregational Church, a sustaining member of the Tabor Historical Society, a member of the Rotary Club, served on the board of directors during the ground breaking for the Grape Community Hospital and was one of the original members of the Tabor’s Low Rent Housing Authority.

Verne was preceded in death by his parents and his son Darrell. He is survived by his wife, Elma of nearly 76 years; son, Duane (Linda) Wilkins; Jane Wilkins; grandchildren Christopher Wilkins, Jeffery (Amee) Wilkins, Amanda (Matthew) Wagner; great grandchildren Penney Wilkins, Emma Wilkins, Elizabeth Wilkins, Carlee Wilkins, William Wagner; Darrell’s wife Suzette; grandchildren Natalie Dyenson, Valarie (Eric) Spurbeck; great grandchildren Dylan (Abby) Wilkins, Marisa Spurbeck, Callie Spurbeck; and, great great grandchild Harrison Wilkins.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Lowell and Shirley Miller, Dennis and Cathy Kephart, and Cindy and Arnold Codr for their loving care and support during Verne’s later years.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Monday, March 16, 2020 at the Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Tabor, IA with Mr. Gary Moles officiating. Burial will follow at the Tabor, IA Cemetery.
