Obituary for Wanda Ruse Ewalt

Wanda Ruse Ewalt left this world peacefully at home on January 13, 2020, after 92 busy years.

Wanda was born in Tabor, Iowa on December 17, 1927 to Walter Olony Ruse and Mable Ida Walno. After graduating from Tabor School she attended Iowa State University and Drake University. In 1948 she married James Buckner and they took up residence on the west coast, where her two sons Champ Clark and James Jr. (Jake) were born. Wanda and James later separated, and Wanda returned with the boys to Tabor where she married Jack Ewalt in 1957. She returned to college at the University of Nebraska and received her bachelor’s degree there.

She taught high school English and French for a number of years in Glenwood. She was a busy church musician as choir director and organist at Tabor Congregational Church, later as pianist at the Methodist Church, and volunteered regularly at Tabor Manor with the ‘old songs’. She enjoyed teaching and her home piano was well worn by hundreds of students.

Wanda was a founding member of the Tabor Historical Society and served several terms as its president. She became a local expert on the Underground Railroad and Tabor College, contributing to historical articles, books, and research projects. She loved Tabor, Iowa, and the Midwest; “Why would you want to live anywhere else?”

She was preceded in death by husband Jack Ewalt and brother Walter Olony (Bud) Ruse, Jr. She is survived by two sons, Clark (Joan) Ewalt and Jake (Darla) Ewalt; grandchildren Michael (Aubrey) Ewalt and Karen (Jacob) LeCount; great grandchildren Jack and Nathan Ewalt, and Morgan and Kyle LeCount; sister-in-law Lorna Ruse and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, January 18, 2020 at the Tabor, IA Cemetery with Rev. Jan Phillips of the Tabor United Methodist Church officiating. There will be no viewing or visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials will go to Grape Community Hospital Foundation in Hamburg, IA or to your local Animal Shelter. The Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Tabor, IA is in charge of arrangements.
