Obituary for W. Elaine Smay

W. ELAINE SMAY, age 90 of Tabor, IA died Friday, January 24, 2020 at Tabor Manor. Born September 8, 1929 in Turlock, CA to Harry August Booth and Pearl May (Lee) Booth. Elaine was married to Leon Smay on March 26, 1948 at Tabor. Leon and Elaine farmed near Tabor for most all their lives. She loved to sing the harmony with Leon while he sang and played the guitar. They called themselves “Country Spirit”. The duo sang at music jams, churches, and nursing homes (especially, the Tabor Manor). They were often asked to perform music at local funerals.

Following her father’s death when she was three, Elaine with her mother and four sisters moved from California by train to Tabor, Iowa. Seeking the support and nurture from family members in Tabor, they became a part of the Hephzibah Faith School and community, which closed in the mid 40’s. It then was replaced by the Tabor Nazarene Church at the same location. Therefore, Elaine spent her last two years of high school at the Tabor public school where she graduated.

Her deep love for her family, her home, her steadfast faith in God and the church were what meant the most to Elaine. She and Leon attended the Nazarene Church for many years. Later they attended Victory Christian Outreach Center in Sidney followed by some years as a part of the Bartlett Community Church family.

For a brief time before her marriage to Leon, Elaine worked in Omaha at a sewing shop and shared an apartment with Leon’s cousin, Peggy Aistrope. Elaine’s array of other jobs throughout the years included working at the then called Good Samaritan Nursing Home, the Tabor Grocery and the Fremont-Mills school cafeteria.

Life on the farm kept her busy as she gardened and cooked amazing spreads of food for the farmers at planting and picking time as well as for her family. Whatever her hands and heart found to do, she did with great care and skill.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; husband Leon; 6 sisters, Wanda Ullom, Wilma Glos, Roberta Noland, Shirley Black, Lavon Cawthon and Carol Ashmun; brother, Glen Booth; and 2 grandchildren, Joel Skinner and Jeremy Rogers.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Joyce Rogers and husband Mike of Kansas City, MO and Becky Skinner and husband Jim of Bellevue, NE; 2 sons, Rick Smay and wife Tammy of Tabor, IA and Roger Smay and wife Roxanne of Marietta, GA; 15 grandchildren, Adam Rogers and wife Paula, Reggie Rogers and Rosie Newell, Natalie Adams and husband Jon, Nate Skinner and wife Tina, Kari Skinner and fiancé Clinton Hughes, Jolynn Carlson and husband Kasey, Nick Smay, Allen Scott and wife Kay, Jon Watts, Ben Watts, Theresa Armstrong, Phil Smay and wife Lacy, Tim Smay and wife Nichole, Shannon Smay and wife Jayma and Frankie Valla; 14 great grandchildren, John Rogers, Hannah Rogers, Coray Newell, Lukas Rogers, Landon Rogers, Lincoln Skinner, Jonas Skinner, Graham Skinner, Zoey Carlson, Taylor Carlson and baby girl on the way, Emma Scott, Tempest Armstrong, Anna Ackerson, Zaira Smay, Noah Smay, Hannah Smay, Lucas Smay; and many other relatives and friends.
